We drink a lot of tea at our house. My wife Nancy (www.thetraveflwriterswife.com) picked up the habit after living in London when she was a student and introduced it to me. In fact, she taught classes on Afternoon Tea here in Colorado for many years sharing her knowledge with tea lovers at libraries, senior centers, colleges and even United Airlines.

So when I was asked if I would like to sample some of Harney and Sons blends, I didn’t hesitate. The company was started by John Harney who was the owner and proprietor of the White Hart Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut. After learning all he could about tea, he began blending his ingredients in his basement in 1983 and offered it to his guests. The results were amazing with many returning to purchase more.

Soon his small, home-based business ran out of room and the operations moved to a new plant with 90,000 square feet of space in Millerton, New York employing more than 200 employees.

After starting with just six teas, they now have three hundred, including freshly brewed iced teas and the company now includes John’s two sons: Mike and Paul.

My samples included several tins containing 20 sachets such as hot cinnamon spice, Earl Grey Supreme, English breakfast, and Paris. The latter is one of their most popular blends made from Black tea, oolong tea, black currant flavor, vanilla flavor, bergamot oil, and caramel flavor. The slight fruitiness of this blend, including a whisper of lemon, did sort of bring back memories of sitting in a sidewalk café along the Seine.

Harney and Sons go to great length to obtain the finest ingredients for their blends which are available at some of the world’s finest hotels such as the Dorchester, as well as on their website. They have a variety of different collections, including a Historic Royal Palaces Collection with tins of 30 sachets starting at $5.95.

From that small basement, Harney and Sons have grown to one of the most respected tea blenders in the world. As a couple who has tried just about every consumer tea available, we would have to say that we are now fans of this company and it will be a regular part of our day.
